One of the twenty-first century’s great ensembles.

VANCOUVER SUN

To hear Silkroad Ensemble perform live once in a lifetime would be lucky, but to be blessed with two performances is nothing short of miraculous. Appearing for the first time in Australia to perform in dance-opera extravaganza Layla and Manjun, this stellar line-up of international talent will also grace Melbourne with a standalone concert of works showcasing its peerless style.

Just as the ancient silk road network connected continents, Silkroad Ensemble's sonic forays traverse the contemporary musical landscape. Its members hail from more than 20 countries and in the crucible of their meeting is forged a new musical language. Traditional instruments from Armenia, Mongolia or Japan can share the stage with those of the Western classical tradition, reflecting the many-layered fabric of life in the world today.

As opposed to a fixed group, the ensemble is composed of a dynamic array of members from across the globe who come together to present never-to-be-repeated events of enduring appeal. Powerful virtuosity, cultural nuance and a unique melding of compositional styles amount to something more than the sum of its parts. Be compelled.
